A Big Thank You to Readers in Massachusetts

I have to thank the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade readers in Massachusetts for selecting Savvy as an honor book for the 2011 Massachusetts Children's Book Award. And in honor of this honor, I've posted this drawing I received in the mail yesterday from Hanna M. in Centerville, Massachusetts. Thanks, Hanna!

Bald eagles in my living room

Last night, I was doing my nightly browsing of NPR.org and learned about the Decorah Eagle Cam. This is a really wonderful live view of a bald eagle nest with two newly hatched chicks and a third egg that has yet to hatch. The image quality is amazing and they appear to have someone attending the camera, because the view will sometimes zoom in to give viewers a better look at the chicks or the egg.

We don't have cable television in our house, but what we do have is a TV with a laptop connected to it, allowing us to watch streaming online videos when we choose. This morning, while fixing breakfast before bringing my daughter to school, we called up the Decorah Eagle Cam and clicked on the button that allowed us to fill the entire television screen with the image. Soon we were eating breakfast with the eagles. We watched the mother feed the two chicks. We saw the camera zoom in to give us a good view of the unhatched egg, and we watched the father eagle return to the nest briefly. Then it was time to go.

Here's a direct link to the cam: http://www.raptorresource.org/falcon_cams/index.html

We don't have a very big television, but the image was so crisp we could almost imagine that the eagles were right there, nesting in our living room. Things don't happen quickly, but isn't that nicer sometimes?
