Uh oh, I may be in trouble (Or . . . My Word of the Week)

I have mixed emotions about my word of the week this week. See what you think:

ONOMATOMANIA

Pronounced AHN-uh-MAD-uh-MANE-ea, this word can be defined as an "uncontrollable obsession with words or names or their meanings or sounds"* or "a mania for repeating certain words or sounds"* or "an abnormal concentration on certain words and their supposed significance"** (wait, supposed?) or "a need to recall a certain word."**

Hmm... I think I may be in serious trouble.

Boulder Bookstore

I will be reading from and signing copies of SCUMBLE at the Boulder Bookstore in Boulder, Colorado, this Saturday at 3:00pm. This is my hometown indie store. I even worked there a couple of times when I was growing up!

For more information, here's a link to the store's info page: http://boulderbookstore.indiebound.com/storeinfo

Fun in Albuquerque

Despite a head cold, I enjoyed my brief visit to Albuquerque very much.

The wonderful staff and owners at Bookworks (some of whom--Laura, Connie, and Nancy--are pictured above with me and a couple of elementary school librarians who stopped by) were so much fun!

One of the store's soon-to-be owners, Wyatt, even ate a Pop Tart/Birthday Cake sandwich. Impressive.

I enjoyed the fact that they have an 'Undead' section marked next to their 'Teen' section.

It was also fun because Laura, from Bookworks, played the viola that night in the lobby of my hotel as part of a group playing fabulous tango music for listeners and dancers. I tried to get a bit of video, but you'll have to forgive the quality of both sound and picture. Book people have many talents, but my camera is cheap and could not capture the true essence of the performance.

Word of the Week

My word of the week is one most people probably know. But with high winds whipping up the raging wildfire tonight, I'll put it out into the world in entreaty anyway:

EXTINGUISH

I'm also good with DOUSE, QUENCH, STIFLE, STAMP OUT, and SUPPRESS. Here in Colorado, we can use any or all of the above.

Photos from the Decatur Book Festival and coming home to wildfire

The festival in Decatur, Georgia, was a lot of fun!

I met Josh Lewis (above), author of the Super Chicken Nugget Boy books, at the author dinner on Friday night. Josh and I have the same agent, but we'd never met before. I also caught up again with fellow Dial author Nancy Werlin (below). Nancy's newest book, Extraordinary, comes out Tuesday! I also got to chat a bit with Jeanne Birdsall, Carrie Ryan, Marie Rutkoski, Laurel Snyder, Jackson Pearce and more wonderful authors (there were hundreds).

Diane and the crew at Little Shop of Stories were amazing. Such a wonderful shop! And they have signed stock of both Savvy and Scumble if you're in the area or want to order from them.

I talked for 30 minutes in the children's tent. The weather was warm, but not too bad!

Here's the crowd just before my reading. It was nice that we had shade!

That was yesterday. I flew home today to cool weather and unfortunate wind... unfortunate because a wildfire started in the mountains in my county and the wind is only serving to fan the flames. Below is a picture of what it looked like from a distance as I was driving home from the airport (it looks much worse now, several hours later). Everything in the picture that looks like clouds is actually smoke. My daughter has friends who have been evacuated from their homes. We are all hoping that this fire can be put out quickly.

Word of the Week (or, Word of the Random Moment in Time)

I haven't done a Word of the Week in a while. So I'm going to share one that was highlighted recently on one of my favorite sites: World Wide Words (thanks again D.K. for telling me about this site and about the weekly email one can sign up to receive).

My word today is: UGSOME

To learn more about this wonderful word, click HERE to go to WWW and read all about it, because, yes, I'm feeling lazy, and I want you to discover this cool word site too. (But mostly it's really because I'm lazy... and I have eight boxes of books to sign for a trade show tonight before I go to bed. Not an ugsome job, just a time-consuming one.)
